You hand over one Pantone reference and a range spanning powder-coated aluminium frames, polyester fabric, moulded plastic feet, webbing and a printed carton. The real question is not whether a factory can hit that colour, but which of those materials you will let drift and by how much. Settling that at spec stage costs a few emails. Settling it at sample approval costs a season.
One reference, five different physics problems
Pantone is a family of reference systems, not one colour language. The Formula Guide exists in coated and uncoated versions because the same ink lies differently on glossy and absorbent stock, so the two chips for one number are visibly different objects. The textile system is a separate library again. None were designed for powder coating or polyester yarn, so your reference is being translated into materials it was never sampled on.
Each material then adds its own optics. A matte woven fabric scatters light and reads lighter and greyer than the chip. A gloss powder-coated tube reflects specularly, so much of what a viewer sees is the light source rather than the pigment, and the colour reads deeper. Change nothing but gloss level, from 30% to 80% on one formula, and buyers will call it a different colour. Metamerism, or why “we looked at it by the window” fails
Two samples made from different pigment systems can match exactly under one light source and visibly diverge under another. That is metamerism, not a defect in either sample. A powder coat and a dyed yarn can sit together happily under the factory’s fluorescent tubes, then split apart under daylight and again under a retailer’s LEDs.
A colour approval without a stated light source is therefore not an approval. Assessment belongs in a lightbox with defined illuminants: normally D65 for daylight, plus a store-type illuminant such as TL84 or a cool-white LED. Both sides agree in writing which one is primary. If your goods sell under a known retail lighting spec, name it early enough to become the second illuminant.
How each material actually gets its colour
Powder coating
Custom powder is formulated by the powder supplier against a target, then sprayed and cured onto a panel of the same alloy and pre-treatment as your frame. Gloss level and texture are separate specification lines, not consequences of the colour, and each shifts perceived shade. Custom batches carry a practical minimum quantity and add a formulation loop before sampling can begin. Stock RAL shades skip that, which is one reason neutrals reproduce so reliably across the folding tables range.
Fabric
Solution-dyed yarn has pigment added to the polymer before extrusion, so colour runs through the fibre and holds far better against UV. The trade-off is a narrower palette and slower shade changes, since you are altering an extrusion run, not a dye bath. Piece-dyed fabric is dyed after weaving, which opens the shade range and shortens the loop but fades sooner and varies more between lots. Deep saturated shades punish you twice: small concentration differences show strongly, and there is more colour to fade. A strong red moves visibly over a season of sun; a heather grey does not.
Plastic and rubber parts
Feet, end caps and adjusters are coloured with masterbatch pellets blended into the resin before moulding. Repeatability between shots is good, but the base resin has its own tint and a custom masterbatch carries its own minimum. Matching a glossy moulded arm cap to a matte textured frame is one of the harder cross-material matches.
Printed packaging and labels
Cartons and hang tags are a different process again: CMYK or spot ink, on board with its own base colour, often under a varnish that shifts the result. Spot ink gets closer than process printing, but the box will still not sit perfectly against the product, so specify it against a printed proof rather than the powder panel. The same applies to printed textile patterns, where registration and repeat matter as much as shade, as on our Polka-Dot Limited Edition Picnic Table.

Tolerance instead of perfection
Colour difference between a sample and a standard is measured instrumentally as delta-E, a single number for how far apart two colours sit. Broadly, about one unit is where a trained eye starts to notice under controlled light, and differences show far more on large flat panels than on small textured parts. A tolerance that suits a tabletop is needlessly expensive on a plastic foot.
In furniture the workable approach is physical rather than numerical. You approve an actual lab dip for each fabric and a sprayed panel for each coated finish. Both parties seal that swatch as the standard and seal two more alongside it: a light limit and a dark limit that production must fall between. That gives both QC teams one unambiguous test instead of an argument.
The workflow that actually holds
- You send the reference, the substrate for each part, and your lighting condition.
- We produce material-specific swatches: lab dips, sprayed panels, moulded chips, a printed proof.
- You assess under the agreed illuminant and comment with a direction (greener, lighter, less yellow) rather than a verdict.
- Approved swatches are sealed and signed with their light and dark limits, and both sides keep a set.
- Every later lot is checked against the sealed swatch, never the original Pantone chip.
That last point matters. Pantone chips fade and yellow with handling and light, so an old chip is a moving target; the sealed swatch, stored dark and flat, is the only stable reference either side has.
Batch-to-batch reality
Dye lots vary and powder batches vary. Approving a standard does not remove that, it only bounds it. Buy fabric for a whole season in one dye lot where your forecast allows, keep adjacent parts within the same lot, and store sealed swatches where they will not be handled. When you reorder two years later, assume a fresh lab dip and approval round, and put it in the timeline, not in the launch window.
Design your way around it
The most reliable strategy is to stop asking for a match you do not need. Contrast is easier than harmony: a black frame with a coloured seat reads as intentional, while a near-match reads as an error. Second, keep the brand colour small and on one material. A webbing strap, a logo patch or a single accent panel carries recognition perfectly well, and confining it to one substrate removes the cross-material problem entirely. Third, let natural materials be natural: bamboo, as on our Bamboo Low Lounge Chair, varies in tone by nature, and specifying an acceptable range for grain beats pretending a wood-based part can be matched to a coating. Frequently asked questions
Can you match a Pantone colour exactly on powder-coated aluminium?
We can get very close on most shades, but an exact match to a paper chip is not a meaningful target because powder and paper reflect light differently. The workable method is for the powder supplier to formulate against your Pantone target, spray a panel on your actual alloy and pre-treatment at your specified gloss level, and have you approve that panel. The approved panel then becomes the production standard.
Why does the fabric look different from the frame when both were matched to the same reference?
Texture and gloss change how a colour reads. A matte woven fabric scatters light and appears lighter and duller, while a glossy coated tube reflects light directionally and appears deeper. The pigments are also chemically different, which causes metamerism: the two can match under one light source and separate under another. Approving both under a defined illuminant in a lightbox shows how they will really look together.

Assume it will need a fresh approval. Dye lots and powder batches vary, and fabric constructions or pigment supplies can change over that period. Keep your sealed swatch, send it back with the reorder, and allow time in the schedule for a new lab dip or powder panel to be approved against it. Where forecasting allows, buying a full season of fabric in one dye lot avoids the problem within a season.
