UV Resistance and Colourfastness: Specifying Outdoor Fabric That Survives Season Two

Fabric colour gets approved from a swatch under office lighting, and nobody finds out whether that decision was right for about eighteen months. Fading shows up neither at inspection nor in the first summer. It shows up in season two, in customer review photographs, long after the repeat order has been placed.

ONWAY SPORTS has manufactured foldable camping and outdoor furniture since 1995, and colour degradation is consistently one of the highest-volume warranty and review complaints our clients handle. It is rarely a safety issue, which is why it gets left off the tech pack, and UV resistance in outdoor fabric is highly controllable if specified before the yarn is bought.

Two different failures that get called the same thing

“UV damage” covers two mechanisms, progressing at different rates:

  • Colour fading is damage to the dye or pigment. UV breaks bonds in the colourant molecule and the shade shifts, lightens or goes chalky, while the fabric itself is unharmed. Cosmetic failure, and the one that generates reviews.
  • Fibre degradation is damage to the polymer itself. UV cleaves the polymer chains, filaments lose tensile and tear strength, and the fabric eventually rips, usually at a stitch line or seat sleeve. Functional failure, and the one that generates returns.

The two are not linked. A fabric can hold its colour and still go brittle enough to tear under an average adult; another can fade to a ghost of the approved swatch and carry full load. Good light-fastness is not evidence that the seat will still be strong in year three.

Dye method is the biggest lever you have

Where the colour sits in the yarn matters more than almost any other decision, and costs nothing to specify. In solution-dyed (dope-dyed) fibre, pigment goes into the liquid polymer before extrusion, so colour runs through the whole cross-section of the filament and identically coloured material sits under the degraded surface. Fade is slow and even.

In yarn-dyed and especially piece-dyed fabric, dye is applied after the fibre exists and penetrates only partway. Colour concentrates near the surface, exactly where the UV energy is, so the same shade fades faster and often unevenly. Printed fabric is the most exposed case: pigment sits on the surface in a binder, and both degrade.

A reclining design that spends its life pointed at the sky, such as the Reclining Starry Sky Chair, takes a harsher dose across seat and back than an upright chair whose back is shaded by the occupant. Geometry helps decide which models justify solution-dyed yarn.

Some colours are simply harder

Deep saturated reds, oranges and bright blues rely on colourant chemistries that break down faster under UV, and because they start intense, the loss is obvious. Greys, blacks, olives and beiges hold their appearance far longer, through better pigment stability and because a shift in a muted shade is harder to see. A brand whose signature colour is a bright red or vivid blue is choosing the hardest case in the palette and should set a higher light-fastness target for that colourway, rather than one number across the range. Solution-dyed yarn for the signature colour and conventional yarn for the neutrals is a sensible split.

The tests that let you write a real requirement

Light-fastness on the blue-wool scale

Graded roughly 1 to 8 against blue-dyed wool references exposed alongside the sample. Higher is better, and the scale is not linear: each step is roughly double the exposure needed to produce the same visible change, so the gap between grade 4 and grade 6 is large.

Grade 4 to 5 suits seasonal goods in temperate markets. Grade 6 to 7 is what premium and long-warranty programmes should ask for, and good solution-dyed acrylic reaches the top of the scale. Grade 3 or below has no business being sold as outdoor furniture.

Accelerated weathering hours

The fabric sits in a chamber under a controlled light source, with cycles of heat, humidity and water spray, for a stated number of hours. Always ask for retained tensile and tear strength alongside the colour rating: that is the only way to see the second failure mode coming. Specify the hours explicitly. A few hundred is a screening test; around a thousand or more, with a maximum colour change and a minimum percentage of retained strength, is a real requirement.

Wash and rub colourfastness

These are graded roughly 1 to 5, higher being better, and measure whether colour transfers or bleeds, not whether it survives sunlight. A fabric can score well here and still fade badly outdoors. Include them anyway: rub transfer onto clothing is its own complaint category. Specify the wet value as well as the dry.

What the lab number does not tell you

Accelerated exposure correlates with real ageing but does not replicate it. Chambers compress time by intensifying light and cycling temperature and moisture, and the ratio of chamber hours to real months differs by fibre, colourant and climate. Treat exposure hours as a qualifying tool, not a prediction.

The same fabric also behaves very differently in a high-UV, high-altitude or subtropical market than in northern Europe, so write the destination market into the requirement. If a range ships to both, specify to the harsher market or accept two quality experiences under one SKU.

The fabric is not the only thing fading

  • Powder-coated frames chalk and lose gloss as the surface binder degrades, leaving loose pigment that comes off on a hand. Exterior-grade powder resists this far better.
  • Printed logos and heat-transfer graphics almost always degrade faster than the fabric beneath them. A brand mark that cracks or ghosts while the fabric still looks acceptable reads as a defect.
  • Plastic components yellow and embrittle: armrest caps, hubs, buckles, feet, bag hardware. UV stabiliser content in the resin is specifiable and almost always omitted. On a model supplied with its own bag, such as the Leisure Lounge Chair with Carry Bag, the bag and its fittings sit outside the chair’s fabric spec unless written in.
  • Thread and webbing are often a different polymer from the panel they join, so they age on a different schedule. A seam failing while the panel is sound is common and avoidable.

What to put on the tech pack

  • Dye method, stated explicitly: solution-dyed, yarn-dyed or piece-dyed.
  • Target light-fastness grade on the blue-wool scale, by colourway where the palette includes difficult shades.
  • Weathering exposure hours, with maximum permitted colour change and minimum retained tensile and tear strength.
  • Wash and rub colourfastness grades, wet and dry.
  • Destination market, or the harshest one in the distribution plan.
  • Scope: fabric only, or also webbing, thread, plastic parts, powder coating and printed branding. This is the line most often missing.
  • A line stating that substituting yarn, dye method or supplier voids the report and requires retesting.

Frame architecture belongs in the same review, since a large flat panel facing the sun is a different exposure case from a compact one. What to tell the end user, and why it protects you

A meaningful share of severe fading complaints come from products stored permanently in the open, a use case no fabric survives. Care guidance on the packaging costs nothing and changes the conversation when a claim arrives: store folded, dry and out of direct sun; dry before storing rather than packing damp; expect gradual colour change as normal for any outdoor textile. Stating fade behaviour honestly, rather than implying colour is permanent, is the difference between a warranty position you can defend and one you cannot.

What light-fastness grade should I specify for outdoor furniture fabric?

On the blue-wool scale of roughly 1 to 8, grade 4 to 5 is a reasonable target for seasonal goods sold into temperate markets. Premium and long-warranty programmes should ask for grade 6 to 7, which in practice means solution-dyed yarn. Is solution-dyed fabric worth the cost over piece-dyed?

For bright or saturated colours, high-UV destination markets, or any programme carrying a multi-season warranty, yes. Solution-dyed fibre carries pigment through the whole filament cross-section, so fade is slower and more even. For dark neutrals in short-season or promotional ranges, yarn-dyed or piece-dyed polyester is often adequate. Many brands split the decision, using solution-dyed yarn only for the signature colourway.

Does a good light-fastness report mean the fabric will not tear?

No. Colour fading and fibre degradation are separate failures. Light-fastness measures only whether the colourant survives; the polymer can lose tensile and tear strength while the colour still looks acceptable. Ask for retained tensile and tear strength after accelerated weathering alongside the colour rating. Without that figure you have no evidence about the seat's strength in year three.

Do UV requirements apply to plastic parts and printed logos as well as fabric?

Only if you write them in, which most tech packs do not. Powder-coated frames chalk and lose gloss, printed logos and heat transfers usually degrade faster than the fabric under them, and plastic hubs, buckles and feet yellow and embrittle without adequate UV stabiliser in the resin. State explicitly whether the requirement covers fabric only, or also webbing, thread, plastics, coating and branding.
