Outdoor Furniture Fabric: A Sourcing Manager’s Guide to Denier, Weave and Coating

Somewhere between the frame drawing and the packaging spec, someone has to decide what the seat is made of. That single line (600D, 900D, 1680D, canvas, mesh) sets the chair’s weight, its packed volume, how it feels in a showroom, and how many warranty claims land on your desk in year two. It is also the line most often copied from a competitor’s listing without anyone checking whether it fits the channel.

We have been building foldable outdoor furniture since 1995, and fabric is the specification where buyers most often over-buy in one direction and under-buy in the other.

What denier actually measures

Denier is a measure of linear mass density: the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of yarn. A 900D yarn is heavier per unit length than a 600D yarn, which in practice usually means it is thicker. That is the whole definition. It says nothing directly about tensile strength, tear strength, abrasion resistance, UV stability or waterproofing.

Two 600D fabrics from different mills can behave completely differently depending on yarn quality, twist, weave density and finishing. We have seen a well-constructed 600D outperform a loosely woven 900D in a tear test. So denier is a useful shorthand for a tier, not a specification on its own, which is exactly why a spec sheet that says only “900D polyester” gives a factory too much room.

The other thing buyers underestimate: everything moves with denier. Heavier yarn means a heavier chair, a bulkier folded package, a stiffer hand feel that reads as “industrial” rather than “comfortable”, and a higher material input. A higher denier is not automatically a better chair. It is a different chair, aimed at a different buyer.

The realistic fabric tiers

In production terms, five tiers matter for folding outdoor furniture, and most projects land on one of them once channel and positioning are honest.

600D is where most volume programmes sit, and there is nothing wrong with that if the chair is honestly positioned. 900D is what we recommend by default for a brand whose chair has to survive several seasons and be reviewed publicly. 1680D belongs on a chair sold on ruggedness, where the weight is part of the story, as with the heavy webbing and reinforced seat panel on our British Army Camping Chair. Canvas is a design decision more than a durability one, and earns its place on lifestyle products such as the Bamboo Armrest Clear-Sky Chair, where the textile has to sit visually alongside a natural material.

Weave and coating: the half of the spec people skip

Oxford weave versus plain weave

Oxford is a basketweave variant that groups warp yarns before crossing the weft. The result is a slightly textured surface, better tear resistance for the same yarn weight, and a hand feel that recovers from creasing, which matters on a product folded and unfolded hundreds of times. Plain weave is tighter and flatter, prints more cleanly and costs less, but it creases harder along fold lines and shows abrasion sooner where fabric passes over a tube.

For folding chairs we specify Oxford in most cases. For flat panels that never fold sharply, plain weave is often the more sensible choice.

PU and PVC backing

Bare polyester is not waterproof, so nearly every outdoor seat fabric carries a backing. The two realistic options behave differently:

  • PU coating is applied thinly, adds modest weight, keeps the fabric relatively supple, and holds up well in cold weather. It provides water resistance rather than true waterproofing, and it can hydrolyse over years in hot, humid storage.
  • PVC coating gives a much higher water column and wipes clean easily, which is why it dominates on hire and hospitality products. It is heavier, noticeably stiffer, and it stiffens further in the cold, so a PVC-backed chair folded at low temperature can crack along the fold line. It also brings phthalate compliance questions in several destination markets.

If the chair ships to a cold-winter market and is stored in a garage or a car boot, PU is usually the safer specification. If it lives outdoors at a venue and gets hosed down, PVC earns its weight.

The trade-offs that actually bite

Abrasion resistance against packed bulk. Moving from 600D to 1680D across a whole chair can change the folded diameter enough to break a carton plan that was already agreed, so fabric has to be locked before cartons are drawn.

Coated waterproofing against breathability. A fully coated seat holds water off the fabric and holds perspiration against the user, which is the most common complaint in hot markets. The fix is structural rather than chemical: mesh where the body rests for long periods, coated fabric on the load-bearing panels and the areas exposed to rain.

Sling seats against padded seats. A sling seat is a single tensioned panel carrying load directly into the frame, so fabric choice, cut and stitch line are all structural. A padded seat, like the deep cradle of a High-Back Moon Chair, hides small fabric variations behind foam, but adds bulk and gives you a second material to specify.

Fabric changes the load path through the frame

This is the point most often missed when a buyer asks us to “just upgrade the fabric to 1680D” on an existing model. A stiffer, less elastic panel absorbs less of the sitting load through its own stretch, and that energy goes into the frame instead, concentrated at the seat corners, the pivot rivets and the tube ends where the fabric is anchored.

Swap fabric tiers on an approved frame and you can move failures from the fabric into the joints, which is the worse outcome: a torn seat reads as a consumable, a broken joint reads as a defective product. When we change tier we re-check corner reinforcement, anchor stitching and rivet spec together, and re-run open-close checks in QC on the revised build. That belongs in a new sample round, and samples typically take 7–15 days.

What to put on the spec sheet so a factory can quote it

A quotable fabric line has five parts:

  • Denier and composition. For example 900D 100% polyester, plus the target fabric weight in g/m² if you have one. Weight per square metre catches the loose-weave problem that denier alone hides.
  • Weave. Oxford or plain, and any required yarn count or thread density.
  • Coating. PU or PVC, the coating weight, and the water column you expect it to meet.
  • Colourfastness. The standard and the grade you require for light and rubbing, not simply “must not fade”. This decides which dyehouse and pigment class we can use.
  • Fire retardancy. State the destination market and the standard. Anything going into hospitality or public venues usually carries a flammability requirement, and an FR treatment changes both hand feel and lead time. It cannot be added retroactively to an approved fabric.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1680D polyester always better than 600D for outdoor furniture fabric?

No. Denier only measures yarn mass, so it tells you the fabric is heavier, not that it is stronger in every respect. A well-woven 600D can beat a loose 900D on tear strength. Higher denier also adds chair weight, packed bulk and a stiffer hand feel. Choose the tier that matches how the chair is sold and used, then control quality through weave density, fabric weight and coating spec.

Should I specify PU or PVC coating on a folding chair seat?

PU is lighter, more supple and stays flexible in cold weather, so it suits chairs that get folded and stored in a car or garage through winter. PVC gives a higher water column and wipes clean, which is why hire and hospitality fleets use it, but it is heavier, stiffer, can crack if folded when very cold, and raises phthalate compliance questions in some markets.

What do I need to include on a spec sheet for a factory to quote seat fabric?

Five things: denier and composition, ideally with a target fabric weight in grams per square metre; weave type, Oxford or plain; coating type, coating weight and required water column; the colourfastness standard and grade for light and rubbing; and whether a fire-retardant treatment is needed for the destination market. Add colour references and any mesh panel requirement and the brief is complete.

Can I upgrade the fabric on an existing chair model without changing anything else?

Usually not safely. A stiffer, higher-denier panel stretches less under load, so more stress transfers into the frame at the seat corners, pivot rivets and anchor points. We re-check corner reinforcement, anchor stitching and rivet spec whenever the fabric tier changes, and re-run open-close checks in QC on the revised build. Treat it as a new sample round; samples typically take 7-15 days.
